Medical facilities in India during Covid-19

An epidemic now turned into a pandemic, Coronavirus a.k.a. Covid-19 is creating its place in human history. This unknown virus from Hubei, named as Coronavirus, has caused more than 6 lakh deaths worldwide. Even with a recovery rate of over 8 million cases all over the world, Coronavirus has replaced the standing of Cancer when it comes to psychological trauma in one's life. A look at the positive sign in a report and some cases lose themselves to despair before losing their lives. COVID-19, the infectious virus, caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome Coronavirus 2 ( SARS-CoV-2), is spreading fast across the world. It is important to realize that this pandemic of COVID-19 has initially happened in well-developed countries, like the USA, that has achieved so-called 'health transition'. India faces the threat of a serious COVID-19 outbreak that would have far-reaching consequences and one of the reasons is its huge population and a large number of people under poverty. If we look into the state of rural India 3.2 government beds are available for 10,000 people, and in Maharashtra, which has seen the largest number of COVID-19 cases, only 2.0 beds are available per 10,000 of population. This poor infrastructure and coordination have made it difficult to tackle public health emergencies, even if it is a non-COVID case. Claims have been made of arranging lakhs of COVID-19 beds, but these beds have been set aside from the existing hospital beds, thereby compromising the treatment of patients suffering from other diseases.

This pandemic situation has surely made people realize the faulty infrastructure, improper health services, and the lack of resources available in the medical field which needs proper attention and amendments. The condition of rural India is more often addressed by WHO scientists like Dr. Soumya Swaminathan, who expressed his concern and warned that rural India may become the next Coronavirus hotbed and emphasized the need to use this opportunity to strengthen and improve its primary health care system.

Since March, due to the growth in the number of Corona positive patients, the Indian government, for the security of its citizens, has called for a lockdown. But many things were done in haste. The worst conditions were faced by the migrant workers who were not given proper aid by the government and have no other option had started to walk their way home with an uncertainty of what lies ahead.

At present, to deal with the current scenario the preventive strategies taken basically follow John Haygarth's 'rules of prevention' from smallpox during the 18th century. This was based on three principals: find every case, isolate the infected individual, and immunize all their contacts. Our government is surely taking COVID-19 as a serious concern by equating the pandemic to a national disaster, laying down the policies, plans, and guidelines for management and ensuring a timely and effective response. But the need of the hour is not only hard work but smart work.
